Topic: United in Christ

Every Sunday we offer our prayers of blessing for anyone celebrating an anniversary of their marriage. The blessing we say together comes directly from the service for Blessing of a Marriage, in our Book of Common Prayer (BCP 431). It begins with the words, “O God, you have so consecrated the covenant of marriage that in it is represented the spiritual unit between Christ and his church.” This unity with ‘church’ is not the institutional church; it is the ‘body of Christ’ church; it is you and me; all of us who believe in Jesus Christ, and all of us who do the best we can, to the best we can understand, to follow Jesus Christ.

Topic: Trusting in Christ

Becoming resolved to a circumstance, to a limitation, can become a way of life. But then, did the reality of this being a mission for 30 years stop us from becoming a parish? No. Have the challenges of keeping this shared home in good repair resign us that we cannot also find the resources to impact lives for good across town, or across the globe? No. There has been a force at work in this community that keeps us from letting limitations define us. That force is trust.

Topic: Love in Action

The Gospel lesson today includes the charge from Christ given on Maundy Thursday; “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.” But this time, in the season of Easter, after the resurrection, in the context of the other readings, there is an intensity to the meaning of Christ’s “new” commandment that I want to talk about today. From Revelation, Christ says, “See, I am making all things new.” And from Acts, Christ’s Spirit is given to all people, Jews and Gentiles. From the OT, Leviticus 19:18 states, ‘love your neighbor’ in the context of being a rule. But now, Jesus is showing us what that looks like, in the flesh. This love of our neighbor is personal, intimate, even dangerous.

Topic: The Lord is my shepherd

I remember being a kid and wanting God to show Himself: sitting on our front porch at night, asking for a shooting star, but there was none; asking to hear his voice, but I couldn’t heard it; asking to show me a miracle – make something happen right when I ask. None of it worked.

Topic: The Encouragement of Doubting Thomas

The Gospel passage takes us to the evening of Easter Day. The disciples who had been scattered by Jesus’ arrest and trial are gathered again. They were a community who needed to be together; who trusted each other. This story focuses on the doubt of Thomas, who needed proof before he could believe that Jesus was alive. He ended up with more than enough faith. Let’s look at some of the times Jesus commented on people’s faith…

Topic: The Power of the Cross

At our last preschool chapel before Easter recess, it was that time in the church year to explain why I wear a cross necklace, and why the school processional cross has a cross shape at the top, and why there is a cross above our altar, and on our walls, and carved into the front of our altar. I explained that religious leaders became more and more angry with Jesus, and more and more jealous about him being a threat to their power.

Topic: The Call to One-ness

Jesus prayed for God to provide four things to his disciples and to all of us who follow after them; protection, unity, joy, and sanctification. It is this mystical union with God that I want to discuss with you today. By our living toward deeper union with God, Jesus says that we achieve and experience union with each other.

Topic: Abiding in Christ’s Love

The setting was Jesus’ last meal with his friends – the Last Supper.

After supper he started teaching them about the Holy Spirit, who would provide them comfort and strength, and would never leave them.

Topic: Sacred Relationships

In today’s lessons our Scriptures continue the discussion about our responsibility as Christians; or maybe a better way to phrase it, is that we are being guided how our new covenant relationship with God should change our perspective on RELATIONSHIPS.
